The Safe Place

Anna Downes

I am grateful to St. Martin's Press for sending me an Advance Readers' Edition of this book, that will become available for purchase on 7/1/20. As soon as I posted about my package on Facebook, friends were interested! I've been reading so much historical fiction, that this was a good "break" for something a little lighter. And just the cover had me hooked.

"'You know, Em,' Scott said, his voice strangely weary. 'The smallest thing can change your life. Just one decision can open so many doors. You can walk through any one of them--or all of them at once--and become a completely different person. And just like that, nothing is ever the same again.'"

4 out of 5 Stars

Emily is an actress. Well, she tries to be. She hasn't been that successful, and she is struggling to make ends meet. She can't seem to get her life together, and even loses her temp job as a receptionist. Then fate steps in, or so it seems. The CEO of the company she was just fired from, offers her an opportunity that she can't refuse. It doesn't make much sense, and it seems too good to be true, but what does she have to lose?

I loved the mystery of this book. The author, Anna Downes, did a wonderful job of giving you little hints that something might be off. And I kept trying to figure out what it was. You feel like you know each of the characters. Nina, the beautiful Australian wife. Aurelia, the intriguing young daughter. Scott, the successful businessman. Yves, the hardworking handyman. But do you really know anyone? A great book for a beach read. How far would you go for someone you love?
