The Snow Rocket

Derek Anderson

My goal when I started Miss Librarian's Book Blog was to blog about every book I read. Not just the good books. And, to stay true to how I really feel. I have to remember that my blog is my opinion, and there is nothing wrong with that. So, sometimes, I will read a book that just wasn't my favorite. However, I will always try and be honest about why I might not have liked a book as much as others, because maybe those reasons won't apply to you, and it will be a book that you enjoy.

"'That was our last chance,' cried Lou. 'Now we're stuck here forever.' But Romeo was already thinking. 'I know how to get home,' he said. 'You do?' said Lou. 'How?' 'The same way we got here. We have to build a rocket ship,' said Romeo."

So, what did I think?

Romeo, (a penguin), and Lou, (a polar bear), are friends who set out to have fun on a snowy day. Much to their surprise, their snow creation comes alive, and transports them to a place they've never seen before, where the animals look a little strange. Follow their adventure as they try to find their way back home.

Well, this book just didn't quite do it for me. Though, I can still find use for it to tie in to lessons. For example, in this story, a penguin and a polar bear are best friends who hang out together. How about a non-fiction tie in about how polar bears are actually found in the northern hemisphere, while penguins are found in the southern hemisphere. This would be a great opportunity to do some animal research. Also, there is a great way to tie in your Makerspace. Romeo and Lou end up building a rocketship out of cardboard boxes. You could give your students a chance to design and create something. Don't get me wrong. This book wasn't horrible, it's just not the first book I'd choose as an interesting read aloud for my students.
