The Bad Seed

Jory John

Sometimes it is hard not to judge based on how someone "seems". They seem angry. They seem mean. They seem rude. They seem like nothing ever makes them happy. Oftentimes, we don't think about the cause. Why does someone always appear to be angry or mean or rude? Why do they seem like nothing ever makes them happy? We must remember that we don't know the circumstances of everyone we meet. The saying goes something like, "Be kind. You never know what someone is going through." It's not always easy, but we should always be kind.

"I'd become a bad seed. A baaaaaaaaaaad seed. That's right. I stopped smiling. I kept to myself. I drifted. I was friend to nobody and bad to everybody."

The bad seed is really bad. He'll tell you so himself. He is always late. He isn't clean. He always cuts in line. But, he wasn't always this way. The bad seed had some terrible things happen to him that turned him into a bad seed. The good news is, being bad is a choice you make. And you don't have to be bad if you don't want to.

Such a great storyline. Kids can understand the concept, and most likely relate the story to someone they know...perhaps even themselves. This book is a great reminder that we should always treat others with kindness. We don't know what happened to make them act out or push others away. They could be dealing with things that we can't even comprehend. What an excellent book to go along with any school that is focusing on being more trauma informed. The BAD seed is a GREAT book.
