Philomena's New Glasses

Brenna Maloney

Animals that are dressed up are so darn cute. Seriously...whether it's a pig in a pink tutu and a princess crown, or a dog dressed up as a puppucino, I can't get enough of their cuteness. So, I was excited to see that this book is a Show Me Award Nominee this year. Adorbs!

"Audrey decided she needed a handbag, too. Not to put her glasses in, though. Her glasses were always on top of her head. She kept snacks in her handbag."

So, what did I think?

5 out of 5 Stars

Philomena is a guinea pig with terrible eyesight. She needs glasses. And once she gets glasses, she decides that she would like some other accessories as well. The only problem is, everytime Philomena gets something new, her sisters do, too. Why do they all have to have the same things? Can't they each be unique in their own way?

Kid tested and approved. My students absolutely loved that this book had pictures of real guinea pigs dressed up. And, though the story line was pretty simple, they were completely engaged. When the book ended, I got the..."Oooohhh noooo...they're going to have to write another book! You know what's going to happen now!?!" The very best part though, were the deleted scenes at the end of the book. We talked about how guinea pigs can be pets, but unlike having a dog for a pet, a guinea pig won't really listen to you and follow directions. Therefore, getting the perfect shots for this book was probably pretty complicated. They loved the author's bio, and her picture with her three guinea pigs. We read this book in first, second, and third grade, and they all loved it. Plus, who doesn't love a guinea pig that needs a handbag to carry snacks in...a girl after my own heart!
