Kick! Jump! Chop!: The Adventures of the Ninjabread Man

Heather Ayris Burnell

If there is a story that I feel is a childhood staple, it would certainly be some version of the gingerbread man. I can still remember in Kindergarten, going on a scavenger hunt around the building to see if any of the other teachers or staff members had seen the gingerbread man. We followed the clues all around, until they led us back to our classroom, where much to our surprise, we found gingerbread men on our desks. It was literary magic.

"Sensei mixed butter, sugar, and flour. He added extra spice to give it some kick, formed the dough into a stealthy shape, and put it in the oven to bake."

Sensei thinks that his team of ninjas needs something to spice things up, so he bakes an extra spicy ninjabread man. He's spicy and feisty, and ready to spar. He takes on each of the competitors at the dojo, and comes out victorious each time. The sly fox has been watching all along, and tries to capture the unsuspecting ninjabread man. The ninjabread man uses his licorice rope to defeat the fox, and Sensei and the team are excited to have a new sparring partner on the team.

I felt like this book was kind of choppy. Ironic, given the title. It had an abrupt beginning, if there even is such a thing. The tag line even seemed to be missing...something. "As fast as you can. You can't beat me, I'm the Ninjabread Man." However, KIDS. LOVE. GINGERBREAD. BOOKS. (AND NINJAS!) And they will totally buy into this book. I recently bought a copy of this book for every kid two of my second grade classes. I got to give out the first batch today. The excitement about a Ninjabread Man was electric. So, there's that.
